Techcrunch writer has reported about the upcoming Amazon’s Kindle tablet here. Sadly, there isn’t any photos of it yet but it’s a 7-inch tablet with capacitive touch screen (the good type of touch screen!), capable of multi-touch and running a modified Android OS. It is rumored to be launched in November in time for Christmas at a price of about US$250, which is about £154 based on current exchange rate. Why am I not excited at all?
First of all, it is running a modified Android. I’m not surprised, judging by the fact that Amazon wants to drive people to use their services and make money from it. This means I’m stuck with whatever Amazon does with the OS and the one attractive feature of Android is how customisable it is. That is one big factor that is driving people to choose Android over iOS.
Secondly, it is a tablet with an LCD screen. The only reason I would buy Kindle is the e-ink technology. I have an iPad and reading on it was not very comfortable over a long period of time. I’m longing for a color e-ink Kindle!
Thirdly, a launch in November? It’s a tablet without much breakthrough in terms of technology from the rumored description. The rumored specs is already not impressive compared to other dual-core chips in current generation tablets. Launching it 3 months from now, especially with iPad 3 launch looming around the corner… hmmph. Not so sure…
The only attractive thing is the price. At £154 (most possibly it will be selling at a higher price than this in the UK due to taxes), it is significantly cheaper than other tablets.
So yeah, if only the upcoming Amazon Kindle is an e-ink reader with color. I’ll be the first one in the queue.. heheee
As you might already know, I bought a Macbook Air recently and under the Apple’s Back to School promotion, I got a free £65 Apple Gift Card to be used for iTunes store, iBook store or Mac App Store.
I’m not going to be using it, so thought I’ll just sell it off for a price lower than £65. If you’re in the UK and wanted to buy something from iTunes, iBook store or Mac App Store, do get in touch with me.
Bought a new laptop the other day. Been using Macbook for the past year and decided to upgrade to Macbook Air. I’ve been waiting for the new Macbook Air to launch since early this year! Finally, Apple decided to upgrade it in July 2011 with the new ultra-low-voltage i5 and i7 Intel processors. My old Macbook already has Intel Core 2 Duo, so the 2010 Macbook Air model didn’t appeal to me. I’m glad I waited though as the 2011 version has backlit keyboard and faster processor.
I bought it through the UK Higher Education store and for those of you who qualify for it, don’t pay the extra £49 or so to get the 3-year AppleCare because you do get the 3-year warranty as a default (even though it says only 1-year during purchasing). There was a discussion in MacRumors about it here and here.
I purchased mine online at around midnight, got delivered the next day! It was faster than expected. Delivery was by UPS. Check out my unboxing photos below.
Initial impression: Very slim and light! Could be lighter though. The back-lit keyboard is beautiful but it’s something I can live without. The keyboard is somewhat nicer than my old Macbook.
Mac OS X Lion is nice to use, but the Mission Control… hmm… I’m still used to the Expose and Spaces from Mac OS X Leopard (I’ve skipped Snow Leopard btw). Perhaps I need a bit of time to get used to it.
Now, what app should I get with the £65 gift card?
I’ve used the Citizen Kane theme for Buddypress and WordPress. It is a nice, simplistic theme but I’ve got a problem with that theme where my post title overlaps with the post thumbnail photo on the main page.
The solution is simple (see below):
- Go to your custom.css file (location: /wp-content/themes/citizen-kane/custom.css)
- Scroll down to the following code:
- Change the highlighted line to something like 50px.
- Save your .css file and refresh your homepage. It should be fine now.
Thanks to Ekine at Buddypress Community for the solution!
